Message from the headmaster

Tikkun Olam

My students know that I usually don’t read or respond to emails after 10:00 p.m., but last month I received a text from our son John after 10:00 p.m. that has been on my mind ever since: “Tikkun Olam. This looks like a chapel talk. Maybe [this is] what you mean when you say leave it better than you found it.” Needless to say, being intrigued and nerdy, I immediately got online to see what I could find out about this phrase.

The information available online indicated that the term originally came from the Hebrew rabbinical tradition but more recently has been translated to “repairing the world”. The traditional meaning came from the belief that, in the time since God created the world and filled it with light, evil has dispersed that light. According to the traditions of tikkun olam, it is the duty of good people to help reunite this divine light through prayer and good works, thereby participating in God’s plan for the world.

I didn’t get much sleep that night as I thought about this idea (and that’s why I don’t read messages after 10:00!), and the very next day, I encountered a concrete example of tikkun olamas I met with art teacher Rodney Reis. Rod has long been our point person in stewarding our art collection and is largely responsible for the restoration of our portrait of Thaddeus Fairbanks and the new lighting of the portraits in Colby Hall. During our meeting, Rod showed me pictures of work he had been doing in Brantview repairing and restoring the parlors there to their original luster and elegance.

Back when Brantview became a dormitory and fire codes required the installation of a sprinkler system, workers bored holes through the historic walls to accommodate the pipes and sprinkler heads, and when we upgraded that system in the recent Brantview renovation, we removed those pipes, exposing the holes and other damage. Rod immediately volunteered to take on the work of repairing the damage. He created his own device to help affix wooden plugs inside the holes, made castings of the decorative carvings and moldings along the various walls, and then—on scaffolds that reminded me of Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel—hand painted the repaired areas so that they are truly indistinguishable from the 19th-century beauty around them.

After showing slides of Rod’s work in Chapel, I made a few observations:

  1. There are lots of things that need to be repaired in the world: the environment, relationships, and people, to name a few. Many times, the damage has been caused by people doing what they thought was best at the time; I’m sure if the sprinkler system could have been installed in some less intrusive way back in the day, it would have been.

  2. At different times of the year, each of us is more or less keenly aware of brokenness within and around us. To be able to practice tikkun olam, we have to be awake and aware of what needs repairing in our world.

  3. Rod’s work shows us a way to repair the world. First, we need to care, following our personal passion or vocation, in the same way Rod cared for artistic beauty and his alma mater. Second, we need to recognize and develop our skills so that we can be useful in repairing what has been damaged; Rod has spent decades honing his artistic skills. Lastly, we need to persevere despite hardship, challenges, and difficulties, inventing creative solutions to problems, like Rod did as he climbed up and down the scaffolding and found creative ways to plug those holes。

  4. We should appreciate those who have been forces for repairing what is broken in our world: people who care for us, use their gifts for our good, and stick with us through our challenges, finding creative and new ways to make us whole.

  5. Finally, we should always believe that repairing the brokenness in the world,--in ourselves or in others—is possible. We should never give up hope.

As Professor Chan Hellman of the University of Oklahoma recently told a group of educators, “Hope is a social gift. It’s not something that takes place in isolation within you; it’s something that we share.” Hellman’s research shows that hope is measurable, ebbs and flows, and can be gained or lost. The more hope a young person has, he says, the more control he or she can have over his or her life and the more successful he or she will be. Hellman cited three requirements for hope: goals, realistic paths to attain those goals, and the willpower to proceed down those paths. He said that hope is harder for the traumatized; the more trauma one has experienced, the harder it is to believe that things can be fixed or that things can improve. In recognizing that we all have experienced some degree of trauma in our lives, he stressed that we all need encouragement to hope.

Since the 1950’s, tikkun olam has been synonymous with social action, and I believe there is much to be gained by looking at the term that way. However, as an educator at a school that has the lamp of knowledge in the center of its seal, I also hold onto the original meaning of the term and believe in the duty of good people to help restore and gather dispersed light. If hope is indeed more than a feeling and something that we share, we can all—as educators, parents, grandparents, mentors, and friends—recognize the glimmers of light in young people and work to help that light shine more brightly and reunite them with the fuller light of an even brighter future.
